HOW CAN YOU HIJACK A CAVE?

A satisfying kidnapping-adventure from the author of such comic, perceptive books for young adults as Good-bye to Good Ol' Charlie. Curt, a basketball star newly arrived in the US from Bolivia (where his father is a sort of one-man Peace Corps), gets a summer job as guide at Cathedral Caverns. When another guide (Pauline, a millionaire's daughter) is held for ransom in the caverns, he and Loft (6'2"", also a guide and a basketball player) attempt rescue through another entrance to the cave, known only to them; after predictable but neatly plotted events--with the added tension of many of them taking place claustrophobically underground--they are successful. A number of qualities raise this above the average thriller, notably deft characterization (Curt covers his insecurities with irrepressible banter and a fathomless smile; he teases quick-witted Lori for taking charge, but in fact the two learn to cooperate effectively), a plausible plot without loose ends, and engaging humor to counterpoint the suspense. An entertaining read.
