KIRKUS REVIEW

Garbage that's what hefty Ellie collects in her ""honey boat,"" accompanied by little Cindy and an adopted seagull. A sprained ankle landlocks her, and the local skippers indiscriminately dump their refuse in the harbor. Soon Edgartown (Mass.) has an epidemic; the symptoms are fever, headache, diarrhea and vomiting. Thunderation! Health officials diagnose dysentery and prohibit shellfish when they discover clams are carriers. In recognition of her long-underrated service the town holds ""Ellie Day"" with the honey herself limping to the podium to say ""shucks, ain't nothin'."" Exactly.
