The country of Garland was covered from one end to the other with beautiful bright colored flowers; the people sold these flowers to neighboring kingdoms and in this way they prospered and were content. Thus when a strange bird arrived and began eating their flowers, the people were enraged; the king offered half of his kingdom and the hand of Princess Paulette in marriage to the knight who could capture the flower-eating fiend. A Thurber-esque bit of fairy tale whimsy brilliantly illustrated with John Todaro's stained-glass window colors and designs.
