A gastronomic tour of Europe is here recorded with perceptive eye and ear- as well as taste buds. And the goal- to bring back for those who cannot travel- to spur the interest of those who do, enough of the particular flavor and savor of Europe's cuisine, and to translate some of the specialties into terms applicable to the American kitchen. On all scores, Poppy Cannon is successful. It is a practical handbook, if you choose to make food your special interest en route, for she even suggests gourmet kits for the traveler by car, and a gourmet calendar that suggests the when and where. Certain basic suggestions of procedure apply variously in different countries:- visit the markets, explore the food stores, buy and try the native foods, try snacks instead of restaurant meals, etc. She gives some hints on interpretation of terms, on variants country by country. Introductory sections capture the particular national qualities of the foods, suggest some of the best places to find the best foods (not always the tourist havens, either). Then, for each country, she gives recipes, chattily presented but with specifics of ingredients and procedure, which can be translated into the home kitchen. England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Italy, Greece, Spain and Portugal -- these are the countries she presents with their gastronomical and gourmet delights.
