Another snaffle-and-bit mystery, this gains on its competition through superior characterization. Too, it has the distinction of an off-beat setting. Toni and Jane Dare dread a prospective family move from Longlynch Farm, near the Dorset and Wiltshire hills in England, because they fear that they shan't be allowed to bring their two horses, Lawrence and Snipe along. But the move to Hammer House, Aunt Milly's guest house for boys and girls, brings membership in a secret club formed by the guests. When they are allowed to pasture their horses in the big field adjoining Hammer House, a strange pony joins their animals. Children will like the family fun and clubmanship which keep the horse from being sold for dog-meat.
