KIRKUS REVIEW

On-record of one of the most foresighted and consistent German liberal republicans, who, though of aristocratic birth, refused to concede to autocracy in any form. Through a journal-autobiography, Loewenstein reports on the successive defeats of democracy, from the fall of Austria to the Saar plebescite, the Barthou assassinations the outbreak of world war. An exile, he served as minister without portfolio and propagandist to turn the tide, he traveled, lectured, saw famous people -- in vain...Adequate, but it seems already out of date, a more than twice told tale. There is little that is new.
