THE DOUBLEDAY PICTORIAL LIBRARY OF GEOGRAPHY

By

Publisher: Doubleday

Geography as viewed today is not a matter of maps and cold facts. There is a philosophy, a science behind it. And that is what is attempted- with considerable succession this third in a series of illustrated reference books. The first half of the text (coordinated from the writings of numerous contribution) starts out with early explorers, with the development of the tools of ""geography""- maps and a basis of measurement, fundamentals of weather and climate, and goes on to discussion of man and the land, man and water. Natural resources and agriculture widen the range and penetrate the area of regional geography with which the second half is concerned. For each of the world geographical areas, the physical features, the economic resources, people and their ways of life, the position in world affairs- all are examined. Geography is the science that provides for orderly arrangement of these facts in sequence, first the Where's and then the Why's. There are more than 800 illustrations, maps, photographs, drawings, many in color. There's a glossary of geographical terms, statistical summaries and a detailed index. A fine piece of book making, thought provoking, and going, far beyond the area of ""good merchandise"", a label that a quick judgement might wrongly indicate.
