A capable telling of a folktale which will be familiar from any number of versions but is sufficiently Spanish-American as set down here. It concerns three sons and especially of course the third one, who succeeds when his brothers did not in discovering what creature has been nightly trampling across their father's maize field. It is a rainbow-colored horse, and in return for Pie's letting him go the horse promises him three favors. They're delivered later when Pie rides the horse to victory (against his brothers) in the three-part contest for the hand of wealthy Don Nicanor's beautiful daughter. The story is illustrated with a combination of grainy woodcuts and tissue-soft rainbow-colored cutouts--an attention-catching juxtaposition but one that devitalizes and distances the story rather than pointing it up.
