A travel book of Cornwall, Devon and the Scilly Isles. Meticulous details as to characteristics of typography, bits of historical background, occasional human interest anecdotes. Literary pilgrimage through Vale of Taunton, Exeter, Exmoor (Pendennis, Lorna Doone, etc.), Ilfracombe (John Gay), Bideford (Westward Ho!), Clovelly (The Three Fishers), Dartmoor (The Hound of the Baskervilles). Then the coast towns of Devon and South Devon, Plymouth and its environs (Reynolds and Turner here), North Cornwall, the King Arthur country, the coastline, St. Ives, Land's End (Wesley), Penzance. From there to the Scilly Isles, Falmouth, Truro, the South Cornish coast (Southey, George Borrow, etc.). Not a popular guide book, as much of it is unnecessarily prosy and a bit pedantic. But careful reading will repay anyone interested in odd corners of the British Isles. Beautiful photographs.
