DAS VERSCHENETE LEBEN: The Gift of Life

A rather fantastic story of a circus rider, Pedro, who -- after the death of his favorite horse -- returns home to his mother and to a quiet peasant life. But when about to settle down to the tranquility of everyday events, he meets the devil in the guise of a gypsy. When his mother becomes critically ill, Pedro gives himself to the devil in exchange for his mother's life. From that time on Pedro is defeated in all he attempts, and the continual frustration of his various hopes and efforts leads to his personal failure, both physical and moral. An obvious variation of the Faustus theme.
