KIRKUS REVIEW

The first volume of Professor Palmer's two volume study, published in 1959, won the Banoroft prize in American history. This second part, in which the French Revolution rather than the American is the prime focus, also synthesizes the groundswells of protest, political and social, which were felt throughout Europe and which occasioned attempted revolutions in Ireland and in Poland. An important contribution to the study of western civilization which includes many of the mainstreams of thought running parallel to the history of this particular period.
