KIRKUS REVIEW

Two books of the past year more or less set the key for this, and you are fairly safe in predicating your probable sales on the success of those books:- Black God by D. Manners-Sutton (Longmans, Green) and Batouala by Rene Maran (Boni & Liveright). A story of Africa, the pervading power of superstitions and tribal taboos, and of two young people who loved outside the prescribed lines. One feels an authenticity, not only of fact but psychology. But it is a book for a rather discriminating public, not for the hoi polloi.
