FOLK AND FESTIVAL COSTUME AROUND WORLD

By

Publisher: Scribners

By the author of Five Centuries of American Costume, this book is illustrated by 111 plates--some 600 drawings. The text applies itself almost completely (except for a brief history of the region or nation) to describing the illustrations with a view to colors of the clothing, characteristic garments, class and sex, occupation (or celebration) of the wearer. Wherever folk costume is Worn daily or on special occasions, it is shown. Some countries receive greater attention than others: African tribal dress in various nations is barely touched upon, while the U.S.A. coverage extends to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, as well as the West, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin. Such regions as Anatolia and Alsace-Lorraine, such far reaches as Mongolia and Hunza; the Basque of the Pyrenees and the Bedouin of the Sahara, the gaucho of the Argentine pampas and the cowboy of the American plains are all here. Global, still at times representative rather than complete, coverage.
