Beste wrote The Moonbeams a few years ago and this one is also a spankingly fresh, intelligent--repeat intelligent--intelligence story in a genre which has been subjected to as much abuse as its participants. Roy Huskion, he's the unexceptional expendable man, is in a sensitive civil servant job when he's approached by one Sherngold (Swiss--Russian) with an indirect offer later converted to overt blackmail. This is put to advantage by King, a nameless, higher figure in Security while, on the other hand, Spinwell, his immediate superior, is not informed nor for that matter does Huskion really know why dummy files have been substituted for the genuine ones. He's in another bind too, as his marriage to Penny disintegrates and he drifts into an affair with his new secretary whom he trusts until he finds a Minox in her handbag. On it goes as he reluctantly is forced to defect to Russia, to kill a man in Paris, and to try and find sanctuary in South America.... Huskion, he's a really likable, believable sort, is part of the reason his story is so involving and even though you will probably see it later, read it soonest.
