Good masculine story in the picture of the British navy, its engagements and men and officers, towards the end of the 18th century. The central figure is Irish, hating England, but determined to take advantage of the training they can give him in their service, preparation -- as he sees it -- for the avenging of his father's murder. He fights the French, he battles in Turkey, at Trafalgar he saves an English friend's life. His inner life is in conflict over the love which interferes with friendship, over the search for vengeance, and only when the New World beckons and promiseshappiness to him and the girl he loves, can he resolve the elements. A technical, historical patterned fictionization of the years 1792-1806, a story of friendship and love and patriotism. But for those to whom the naval background, told in great detail, is unknown ground, the story is barely sufficient to carry over.
