Rabbi Bokser of the Rabbinical School of the Jewish Theological Seminary has written a helpful and informative book which should find a market beyond the Jewish faith. Here are the basic concepts of Judaism, presented with a strong foundation of acceptance, but with a flexibility of interpretation that will appeal to moderns. Occasionally orthodox in viewpoint, the Rabbi is more often on the side of liberalism. He feels that all religions are gaining in strength and influence today, that even science has strengthened belief in God. He meets many of the problems that disturb even religious people:- illness, pain, fear, poverty, ignorance, the after life, etc. As a Zionist he concludes with a most optimistic chapter on Israel and its accomplishments, once more showing God's influence in bringing millions of Jews to the Holy Land. Although at times controversial and sometimes irritating for the on-Jew -- and too frequently overladen with scholarship for the layman and with repetition for the careful reader, this provides for the inquirer a guide to the key points in a faith that is growing in numbers and significance.
