A prehistoric cutie is overwhelmed when her family hosts a big soiree.

Little Shyasaurus—a pterodactyl-like creature—relishes quiet solitude. She spends her time peacefully making flower crowns and gazing at the clouds, and she couldn’t be happier. When Momma and Papa announce they will be throwing a huge party—“with EVERY SINGLE cousin and your good old Uncle Marty!”—Shyasaurus grows nervous. Colorful dinosaurs who vary in age and species, clad in pearl necklaces, spectacles, and more, arrive to share a feast. It isn’t long before the hustle and bustle—not to mention unwanted kisses from a well-meaning but overbearing aunt—sends Shyasaurus crawling underneath the huge dinner table, where she feels a bit lonely. But when someone else appears beneath the table, Shyasaurus discovers that lots of folks, even adults like Momma, need a break from all the action. Bright’s tale ends with a musical celebration that validates feelings of shyness and encourages little ones to “climb outside what’s comfortable / in ways that feel just right.” Chatterton’s vibrant illustrations of sweetly anthropomorphized creatures are full of details for little readers to pore over. Laudably, Shyasaurus is accepted for who she is; this story’s warmth, positivity, and lively rhyming text make it an approachable resource for discussing shyness, anxiety around crowds, and other big feelings.

A gently empowering tale for dino-loving introverts.
