Where Peekaboo Morning (2002) began the day, Isadora’s latest features the delightful brown-skinned, tousle-haired toddler wrapping up his/her day with the same people and objects with which it started. “Peekaboo! I see . . .” begin the right-hand pages, which also sometimes give visual clues as to what may be found when the page is turned. The moon, family members and pets, slippers, rubber duck and blankie are among the surprises he/she finds along the way, while the final page provides readers with a surprise of their own. The pastel illustrations are a delight, a visual celebration of family. The joy and love on the child’s face show readers that the bedtime routine is a special time and that the people and objects “found” by the child are beloved favorites. Fans of Isadora’s toddler will not want to miss Uh-oh! (2008), also due out this month. Perfect for laptime sharing or calm story hours. (Picture book. 2-5)

Lola’s daddy takes her to the library every Saturday, where she finds “excellent books,” and every night her mommy or daddy reads them to her. The next day Lola acts out the story. On Sunday she’s a fairy princess; on Monday she takes her toy animals “on fantastic trips to places like Paris”; on Wednesday she’s a tiger, etc. Each new book and day provides Lola with a variety of tales to play out, with the last one—which is about a wild monster—posing the question, “What will Lola be tomorrow?” The final page shows her in a wolf suit just like Max’s. The library books, the pretending and the incorporation of the days of the week work together as a simple and pleasing premise. Beardshaw’s acrylic illustrations depict the multicultural kids and Lola’s black family with childlike charm, while the title will have librarians, parents and booksellers smiling. Alert: The book will be an invitation for lap kids to follow Lola’s lead—not such a bad thing. (Picture book. 3-5)

A cheery little girl and her dad plan a shopping trip, go to the grocery store (by bike), purchase ingredients and go home to make pizza for the whole family (a biracial one, in a nice touch). An enthusiastic running commentary narrates the activities, which all go smoothly and safely, with just a bit of mess. Birkett’s bright, line-and-color illustrations focus on the child and her contributions, evoking Aliki in line and mood. The narration, which seems to include both the child and her father’s dialogue without distinction, may confuse some readers slightly, but its rapid-fire enthusiasm is appealing. This entry in the Helping Hands series is joined by Clean It! (ISBN: 978-1-84643-283-6), Fix It! (ISBN: 978-1-84643-286-6) and Grow It! (ISBN: 978-1-84643-285-9). All have a thinner-than-usual page stock that suits them, appropriately, to toddlers. (Board book. 2-4)
