KIRKUS REVIEW

Further fictionizations of historical episodes and their important figures. Anne Boleyn and her death; Lady Jane Grey and her youthful tragedy; Elizabeth and the arrogant Essex; Lady Arabella Stuart and Sir William Seymour's fatal marriage; Catherine de Medici and the successful culmination of a 25 year's wait for queenship; a monk's expiation in killing the King of Paris; Henrietta's love affair which resulted in poison; Christina's regal countenancing of murder; Maria-Theresa and the expansion of her empire; Struensee's rise and fall from power; Catherine's devious route to the throne of Russia; the marriage Napoleon did not make...condensing historical backgrounds into vivid pictures of the periods. Biased, sometimes, but readable.
