A superb piece of organization for a scholarly, statistical report on social conditions in Latin America, which should be a ""must"" for anyone, statesman or layman, with interest in the economic and social present and future of South America. As a product of the National Planning Association, the text is the outcome of invaluable advice, both official and unofficial, from representatives of Latin America. The central theme of ""freedom from want"", as put forth in the Atlantic Charter is the central thesis for a survey of problems of prevalent poverty, maltrition, health (pathological and deficiency diseases), industrial and agricultural development. The impact of the war is surveyed in relation to housing, health and food programs. Finally, recommended policies and implements are presented on the basis of conditions new and the changing attitude of the U.S. Charges, tables, statistics verify the conclusions; recommendations are conditioned by acceptance of the ideology of the Good Neighbor Policy. In its field -- tops.
