There is a certain spell cast by the mere mention of an ""English Country House"". They are always delightful, though sometimes lacking in certain luxuries for which they make up in charm, history, architecture and a thousand ways. Mr. Dutton traces their growth from the earliest houses in all their severity to the great Georgian houses we know best. He intrigues us with their routine, their menus, their home life and social life, their place in the country and their gardens and parks. The pictures are particularly interesting as they gives ""inside"" pictures the traveller could never see unless a guest in those old homes, which is actually what you feel as you read along, lost in the completely individual atmosphere of each home.
