TO THE PACIFIC WITH LEWIS AND CLARK

An informed, comprehensive discussion of the first expedition (1804-06) into the Northwest, tracing the steps from Jefferson's idea nearly twenty years before through the two years and four months on the trail (with quotations--in the original spelling--from the Journals of Lewis and Clark), and then back to life in civilization. Lewis and Clark are wise but certainly not omniscient, and Sacagawea is honestly of little help. A discreet presentation of skin color issues (black and white in the expedition, red all over the hills) and a sophisticated approach to the problems of the journey (some were so disheartened upon reaching the Pacific that they did not want to look at it) make this far more scholarly than Davis' No Other While Men, and as expected from this series the reproductions are striking and well integrated with the text including modern photographs, museum representations and explicit, helpful maps.
