GERONIMO: Wolf of the Warpath

This latest addition to the Landmark Series, illustrated by Nicholas Eggenhofer, gives a factual account of the life of Geronimo, Apache Chief, from his infant training in the Arizona-New Mexico territory, where he learns from his father the sure-eyed, sure-footed courage which was later to both distinguish him and make him the most feared of all Indian warriors, to his drunken death in Oklahoma in 1909. Moody, who has written several adult books on American themes, draws into his portrait of Geronimo the whole tragic history of the Apache people and shows how their exploitation by mercenary whites turned the potentially heroic Geronimo into a ruthless killer. Peppered with famous names -- Kit Carson, Natche, Chihushu, etc. -- this is an objective and interesting treatment of one of America's most celebrated outlaws.
