This novel by one of Spain's foremost writers will get critical attention but a somewhat market. It is a strange, symbolic story of death and lust and struggle for power. Violent, atavistic, savage, related with spare lyricism, it is a story of a penal colony off the coast of Maxico, of Black Trinidad who ruled the island but was murdered on his wedding night when he returned there with a young and gentle virgin. His death releases forces vying for his power, -- rapists, pimps, killers. The girl is hidden by a marajus addict and it taken bloodshed and violence to prove the one good man the strongest, and to persuade the girl to stay with him. Certainly not a book for your maiden aunt.
