PRO PATRIA

Translated from the Spanish. The story of a young Spaniard, Viance, who gave away his earnings to his father, who gave away his youth to his country in the wars against Morocco, who gave up his chance of advancement. The entire story is full of gory details -- pretty harrowing -- exceedingly unpleasant. Throughout, the theme is the gradual disintegration of the youth, ending in tragedy and hopelessness. Excellent writing, smooth, straightforward, vivid. An important book, for those who can take it.
