KIRKUS REVIEW

Jarrell's lovely poem from The Bat-Poet takes surprisingly well to the picture-book format, providing (incidentally) as much information as a Let's-Read-and-Find-Out introduction along with the pleasures of genuine poetry. Schoenherr's blue and black pictures, however, get it all backward; instead of being gentle but precise, they are harsh but indistinct. The mood of the poem is not enhanced by these monotonous, swooping compositions, and it is all but destroyed by the inky deep color, which is unaccompanied by any feeling of depth or, alas, any depth of feeling.
