The Companion Volume to the Churchill biography is in two parts, actually two volumes: Part I covers the years 1874-1896; Part 2, 1896-1900. Here are published documents relevant to those quoted in the first main volume of the biography, those reserved exclusively for this work. They include letters, schoolmasters' reports, passages from books, cables, wine-merchants' bills, telegrams, extracts from newspaper and magazine articles and ""form the solid bone-structure of this monumental life."" Randolph Churchill terms it ""the brief on which Volume I was written.
