The American Revolution means liberty to seventeen-year-old Rob Kincaid who helps the militia in Virginia. Rob is associated with the legendary Captain Jack Jonett who alerted Jefferson that the British were coming to Monticello; Rob also rides to warn the governor but the trip is more dramatic than the meeting. He knows he's fighting for Liberty and his escapades force him to define and redefine just what it means; he concludes that to be valid it must include Charley, the Negro slave he meets along the way who has joined the army to gain his freedom. Adventure alternates with domestic scenes and budding romance, treated with realistic restraint--barely introspective but carefully selective.
