KIRKUS REVIEW

Ricky's hard but ultimately successful time, breaking into the gang in a new neighborhood where he receives in turn the silent treatment, taunts, an eyeballing challenge and at last a laughing welcome, is observed with empathy and a shade of quiet tension. And if Prather's unpretty kids and purplish brown scenes of the flat, treeless tract don't invite pleasure seeking eyes, they do reflect Ricky's feelings of loneliness and dislocation.
