Harry Adkins, The Little Ferret (p. 322), modeled on a real Georgian English detective, is alas, a prototypical purse-lipped stiff in spite of his penchant for dandyism. ""Little Mr. Napoleon"" is ready to spring across the channel, and the local smuggling on the Kent coast takes on a more sinister aspect -- French espionage. There's a murder or two, midnight foggy doings among the moonshine men and a mysterious chain of command. Too bad the Ferret seems to have run afoul of a taxidermist.
