Jack Bradford, a boy of twelve, tells this story of his hike from Chicago to Peoria, in search of an unknown grandfather after his own father's death. His funds are limited, so he earns his way by various means, and he and his dog Andy, ""who started out to be an Airedale"" have many adventures, run into scrapes, and emerge triumphant. Humorous, slightly pathetic at times, with occasional bits of philosophy that seem a bit out of key, and above the average young reader's head.
