He discusses and distinguishes between the particular quartiers (Montmartre, Montparnasse, St. Germain-des-Pres, etc.) in which the various painters have found an appropriate artistic climate; he relates painting to other art forms and their development; etc., etc. Primarily however there is the visual excitement of the 103 full color plates of the works of the great contemporary and near contemporary artists of our day, from Picasso, Rouault, Vlaminck, Modigliani, Buffet, Leger, Dufy, Chagall, on to many lesser names. And the closing section, with further black and white reproductions, photographs and a bibliography of close to 500 artists adds to the definitive as well as pleasurable value of the book.
