The Painters and the Artistic Climate of Paris since 1910"" are presented here in a both beautiful and opulent volume and introduced in a highly knowledgeable text by the director of the foremost showcase of French modern art- the Galerie Charpentier. Mr. Naconta's foreword to the Ecole de Paris-""unique in its diversity""- differentiates the various trends- Fauvism- Cubism-Expressionism- etc. along with seven synoptic tables in color. He discusses and distinguishes between the particular quartiers (Montmartre, Montparnasse, St. Germain-des-Pres, etc.) in which the various painters have found an appropriate artistic climate; he relates painting to other art forms and their development; etc., etc. Primarily however there is the visual excitement of the 103 full color plates of the works of the great contemporary and near contemporary artists of our day, from Picasso, Rouault, Vlaminck, Modigliani, Buffet, Leger, Dufy, Chagall, on to many lesser names. And the closing section, with further black and white reproductions, photographs and a bibliography of close to 500 artists adds to the definitive as well as pleasurable value of the book. A connoisseur's choice and a beautiful gift book.
