Recently transferred from the McGraw Hill list (copyright 1940), this is a book of interest chiefly for schools, colleges and public libraries. But the trade should know about it, as it is a one-volume history of art, presented from a somewhat new angle and with a fresh approach and purpose. The author's intention is to concentrate on a few great works of art to prove his points; to present the formal principles of composition; to develop the critical use of the art principle; to encourage an active participation in art creation. He develops his thesis on a background of a social history of art as related to the ages of man, and the various influences, from the days of the hunters up to the 20th century. Each chapter has its own bibliography, a list of suggested recordings. An adequate index makes it a good reference tool.
