Some will perhaps remember, and remember having liked this author's first novel which won the Prix Femina, published by Morrow over here this year under the title Born of Woman. Again we have an extremely idyllic country story, more noticeable for the author's appreciative descriptions of the rural, peasant scene and unpretentious, homely virtues than anything else. This is a repeat on the old Tess of the D'Urbervilles theme, that of the young farm servant who responds too completely to a town Lothario and who is abandoned -- in time to find a home with a clumsy but well meaning local youth. Sincere, and occasionally, poetic.
