KIRKUS REVIEW

Prix Femina and again a picture of rural life in the province of Berry. This story of the childhood, adolescence and maturity of a peasant girl, is a minute record of everyday toil in the farmhouse and in the fields. The author, born in such a family which she only left at seventeen, with the catechism as her only education, has built this story from her childhood memories. There is little drama, little action save that of small events, first communion, village festivities, and eventually marriage to her cousin, the serenity of rustic life governed by the changing seasons. Quietude almost verging on the tepid, with little originality.
