A playful first book from a Romanian-born artist (now a Belgian citizen) who imagines the adventures a child's shoes might have while their owner sleeps. Changing their laces from green to red (how isn't revealed), they creep downstairs, tiptoe past the grownup shoes, and set off over the countryside to a fair, where they ride the carousel, laugh and dance with other little shoes, and watch star-spangled shoes perform as acrobats and bow-tied shoes tap-dance. The simple, novel idea is ingeniously developed in eye-catching illustrations with a strong sense of graphic design and the intense Crayola colors that especially appeal to young children—who are also perennially fascinated with shoes and their whereabouts. An attractive debut. (Picture book. 2-6)
