The author of In Praise of Wolves (1986) and other adult wilderness books contributes to the ""Sierra Club Wildlife Library."" Lawrence grabs attention by beginning with a lurid description of his terrified response to an early encounter with timber wolves: ""I was sure I was going to be killed. . .I imagined how my body would be torn apart and eaten, and how my gory bones would be scattered for the ravens."" But his subsequent text, following the life cycle of the wolf in the wild, aims to dispel misapprehensions about wolves that lead to such fears: he concludes that ""the old myths and fears about wolves are dying. Wolves deserve to live undisturbed."" Though some of his descriptions verge on anthropomorphism (""All of [the members of the wolf pack] are excited as they await the arrival of the new generation""; the pack is ""like a traditional human family""), his text is readable and informative. The 30 clear, rather briefly captioned full-color photos are appealing. A good introduction to a high-interest subject.
