Rebecca Caudill has written stories for various age groups, all of which have serious central themes of growth and family relationships- as does this. Motherless 15 year old Monica Fifer is sent by her father to spend the summer with relatives on their farm in Kentucky, for she has been living rather a flighty and unstudious life with her school friends in Chicago and it is hoped that country living will help her discover her true self. Monica does well and in three months, marked also by 4-H activities, friendships with her cousins and Kentucky deepens- until Monica is able to take yet another innovation- her father's plan to marry again. Slow moving at times, this has its values in warmth and a feeling of achievement that bring their own rewards.
