BARRIE & DAUGHTER

Turn of the century -- and the Kentucky mountains as background, in a story of how Barrie and her father prove something in righting the wrongs done by the Scollards to the countryside. They have the store across the way; the Barries find obstacles put in their path in their idealistic attempt to run a fair store in rivalry. This for the main theme. There are minor incidents, rounding out the characterisation and the feel of the country and people, -- a wild ride through the night on a half-broken horse to save a baby's life, tense moments on Election Day, with lives at stake, Forn's brother's hidden urge to be an artist, her beau's desire to be a doctor, her father's high principles, her mother's deep understanding -- all blend into an earnest story, which none the less, seems limited in appeal.
