Bright collages creatively evoke two busy milieus--the city with its sounds of waking and rising (alarms, showers, radios), traveling across town (various vehicles an shoes), working, lunching, and enjoying the evening; the jungle with a zoo-like array of animals that have footsteps as well as voices, that click their teeth (crocodile) or bubble underwater (hippo). The representation of the sounds varies from imaginative (dog singing: ""aroooo"") to conventional (tug boat: ""toot toot""); each sound is printed on the illustration at its source (e.g., ""bweeet"" emerges from a boiling kettle). Final glossaries list all the sounds and their makers; the city sounds are cleverly grouped by source. Though not unique (cf. Margaret Wise Brown's Quiet Noisy Book and Spier's Gobble, Growl, Grunt), these attractive concept books are sure to entertain as well as to encourage children to devise still more phonetic mimicry.
