THE HOUSE IS DARK

A more than usually sufficient unto-the-day-or-evening romantic suspense story in which professor's daughter Alison Howard who has been jilted (perhaps because she never owned a pair of slacks even if she has lots of money) takes her demure self to the grandiose home of a grandiose theatre family, the Vails. Barrymoresque--first lady Haidee appeared in The Corn is Green; brother Lionel, a playwright, drank and killed himself. Or did he? There's the question of a lost last play which might prompt murder, a fatal fall and the attempt against Alison when they revive the old Vail summer theatre. After several trips to the family cemetery, old ghosts are permanently laid to rest. The house is dark, the night is long, the lady is lonely--it'll do as such.
