KIRKUS REVIEW

The publisher calls this a collection of novelettes. Perhaps, by courtsey -- though I should call it a collection of long short stories. One of them, The Abiding Vision is one of the best stories I've read for some time -- the story of a self-made man, the wife whom he puts on a pedestal, the mistress who feeds his ego, and of what happens when the depression knocks the props out from under. There is a certain brittle vigor to all of them; the settings shift from England to America; the time is the present. Five stories in all.
