INSIDE HITTING

Superduperstar Jackson, the magnificently muscular, strong-shouldered, wrist.hitter of the Oak. land A's, shares what he's learned about the game for the benefit of developing ballplayers. Although hitting is his favorite phase of the sport, he considers winning World Series rings even sweeter. Jackson rates baseball ""on a par with family and right behind religion"" (the kind of remark you'd expect from Roger Staubach). The slugger's own basics of good hitting cover attitude, concentration, relaxation, balance, bat selection and stance (does a metronome help one's timing?). Other generally accepted suggestions: hitting to all fields, knowing your strike zone, batting practice and bunting, conditioning, and the proper mental attitude (fearlessness!) at the plate. As with most manuals of this kind, those hints on gripping a bat won't compare with the visual thrill obtained by watching the author's tape-measure taters. Perfectly suitable for fundamentally backward sandlotters -- but it's a pitch you may no longer need to swing at.
