THE MAKING OF A JAPANESE PRINT: Harunobu's HERON MAID

An ideal Christmas gift, reasonably priced but elegant and tasteful, this folding book consists of ten hand-carved, hand printed blocks. Each one displays a different stage in the making of the print, illustrating the complex manner by which the print masters colored their original drawings. Not only fascinating in the technical virtuosity it displays, but aesthetically rewarding as it develops from a tender black and white figure to a delicately colored portrait of one of Haunobu's ""bi-jin"", beautiful women, set in a Japanese winter landscape. Attractively bound in gold illuminated material.
