Some mysterious force is killing the dolphins and people who swim too close to the Boiling Hole off Grand Bahama, and elderly schoolteacher Evelyn Wade (Long Lines) strikes an unlikely alliance with Esquire journalist August Clevenger and voodoo matriarch Mama Da to find out what and why (a long-dormant virus? a fast-acting poison that leaves no trace except for cirrhosis? witchcraft and black magic?). Voodoo threats and the violent death of a sympathetic pathologist put Evelyn on her guard against Mama's daughter Aimee, who's taken up with the sinister Sugar Man, Eric Cousson, and is practicing bad magic; but as Evelyn delves into an intricate mystery whose roots go back eight years to a bizarre plague in Angola, she doesn't know that Clevengerseduced by Carolyn Grass, who likes to smoke crack and get spankedis in more danger than she is. Colorful locales, generous portions of menace, and a finale pitting good voodoo against bad voodoo and fake voodooall diluted by a National Geographic sense of evil.
