THE ICE PEOPLE by Rene Barjavel

Pub Date: Feb. 17th, 1970
Publisher: Morrow

A lost Atlantis beneath Arctic ice with enough ardor to melt it, plus some inventive gadgetry and contemporary parallels. Scientists from all our squabbling nations pitch in to revive two spectacularly decorative bodies (a tentatively identified male and the female, Elea), from a nine hundred thousand year old buried capsule. Through some nifty sort of brain TV the scientists reconstruct what happened to the civilization of these children of paradise, and the luxurious love life of Elea, whose undraped form occupies the author more than cathodes. But in a Romeo/ Juliet mixup, poor Elea kills herself and ancient lover. The scientists withdraw sadly from the excavation -- all that work for nothing. Amusing.
