A massive compilation of the law as we know it today, with its background. The author attempts to define the word, to explain the innumerable forces and men which helped shape it. We are introduced to the law under the ancient Jews, carried along under the Greeks and Romans, the Dark Ages- and some developments, the refinements of the later Western Europeans and English, through American history and a finale of New Deal changes are included. There is a section on the development and breakdown of international law -- the one place where a definite opinion is evident. The area covered is too great for detail, but for a superficial introduction for laymen it serves as a handy volume.
