Many non-Catholics, and no doubt some Catholics, have wondered how it was possible for the Church to nonize Joan of Arc when the church authorities had previously condemned her to death. How did a heretic become transformed into a saint? George Bernard Shaw's play has sharpened this question in many a mind. Father Riggs, for many years the Catholic Chaplain at Yale, has devoted this volume to its answering. It is a technical, historical monograph, rather difficult for one to follow who is not versed in the intricacies of the judicial proceedings of the church. In brief, the author's explanation is simply that the original verdict was reversed in a review of the trial conducted after Joan's death.
