The story of a young boy with the Mormons on their trek towards Utah in the late 1840's. The background is not nearly so well dealt with as it deserves, and Thad's adventures are too many, his escapes all hairbreadth, with the result that the book reads too often like a pulp serial and the underlying theme -- the maturing of the egocentric Thad -- misses fire.
