When the parents of a backwoods family died of cholera, their children were determined to stay together and maintain the homestead. As 18-year-old Joel decided to spend the summer trapping furs in an attempt to raise enough money to pay the mortgage, most of the responsibility for taking care of the family fell upon Hennah. Her courage was reflected by the Nat, who at 14 had to keep the farm running, and by the other children, who although young had to help out as much as possible. The difficulties besetting a 19th century Kansas family and the bravery of a group of children in meeting them are sympathetically described.
